As you all know this semester in the Half-Day Kindergarten and the two Full Day Kindergarten classes, we are learning about how we can help save endangered animals as part of our PBL (problem based learning) project. This blog will help keep you updated with what we are doing in the classroom!
Before we could learn about endangered animals, we had to learn a little bit about extinct animals and what that means. We foucused mainly on the dinosaurs during our learning about the word "extinct". We did talk about other animals such as the Do-Do Bird too.
When learning about our dinosaurs we read lots of books. I think the favorite by far was Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freeman and Ben Cort. In this book Dinosaurs love to wear underpants but there just aren't enough to go around. At the end the dinosaurs end up going extinct becuase they wouldn't stop fighting over the undies!
After reading this book we had the the kids think about why they thought dinosaurs went extinct. We had them write down their predictions and draw a picture of a dinosaur to make a class book. Here are some pages from a class book!

"I think dinosaurs are extinct becuase they
got to old." |
"I think dinosaurs are extinct because a big storm." |
"I think dinosaurs are extinct by other dinosaurs." |
"I think dinosaurs are extinct because they are to big." |
"I think dinosaurs are extinct because people shot them." |
Mrs. Erickson's class put together some dinosaur puzzles. |
We each got to put a piece in to make the T-Rex. |
